Father's Day - Facts About Fathers, Worldwide Observances and Gift Ideas

About 4,000 years ago a young boy named Elmusu wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life by carving a Father's Day message on a card made out of clay. No one knows what happened to Elmusu or his father, but the tradition of having a special day honoring fathers has continued through the years in countries across the world.

The idea of Father's Day was conceived by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash., while she listened to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children by himself on a rural farm.

Dr. Robert Webb of West Virginia is believed to have conducted the first Father's Day service in 1908 at the Central Church of Fairmont.

President Lyndon B. Johnson recognized the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day with a presidential proclamation in 1966, but the holiday was not really made permanent until 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed a presidential resolution that made the third Sunday in June officially Father's Day in the United States.

Facts about Fathers

There is an estimated 64.3 million fathers in the US. US Census: Unpublished data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation

The number of single fathers is 2.3 million, up from 393,000 in 1970. Currently, among single parents living with their children, 18 percent are men. US Census

Stay-at-home dads number an estimated 140,00 in 2008. These married fathers with children younger than 15 have remained out of the labor force for at least one year primarily so they can care for the family while their wives work outside the home. These fathers cared for 234,000 children. Among these stay-at-home dads, 54 percent had two or more children US Census: America's Families and Living Arrangements: 2008

The world's youngest father is a 6 yr old from China.

Les Colley (92 yrs 10 months) was the world's oldest dad.

Among 11.3 million preschoolers in the US whose mothers are employed, 25% are regularly cared for by their father during their mother's working hours. This amounted to 2.9 million children. US Census: Who's Minding the Kids? Child Care Arrangements: Spring 2005

In 2008 there were 1.8 million single fathers in the US. Currently, among single parents living with their children, 16 percent are men - eight percent were raising three or more children younger than 18, while about 51 percent were divorced, 25 percent were never married, 19 percent were separated and 5 percent were widowed. US Census: America's Families and Living Arrangements: 2008

53% of children younger than 6 ate breakfast and 71% ate dinner with their father every day in 2006. The corresponding percentages who ate with their mother were 58 percent and 80 percent. (The percentages of children who ate breakfast with their mother or father, respectively, were not significantly different from each another.) US Census: A Child's Day: 2006

36% of children younger than 6 had 15 or more outings with their father in the last month, as of 2006. Children ages 3 to 5 were read to by their fathers an average of 6 times in the past week, as of 2006. US Census: A Child's Day: 2006

50 percent of all Father's Day cards are purchased for dads. Nearly 20 percent of Father's Day cards are purchased for husbands. Other categories include grandfathers, sons, brothers, uncles, and someone special.

While Mother's Day was the biggest holiday for phone calls in 2006, Father's Day was the busiest for COLLECT calls. (The overall busiest day of the year in 2006 for phone calls was the Monday after Thanksgiving. However, since cell phone usage is increasing, the "collect" calls are expected to decline.

Father's Day is the fourth-largest card-sending holiday in the United States, with 110 million cards exchanged annually.

As "nontraditional" family structures become more common, any nurturing man - a "big brother", a brother-in-law, an uncle, a neighbor or perhaps another special man who is "like a father" is likely to be honored on Father's Day.

Nine out of 10 Americans say they look forward to receiving personal letters and greeting cards because cards allow them to keep in touch with friends and family and make them feel they are important to someone else.

Although e-mail, text messaging and phone calls are valued by Americans for helping them communicate with family and friends, the majority of Americans say they prefer the old-fashioned handwritten card or letter to make someone feel truly special.

No matter what day you celebrate, the point is to make Father's Day special for the man you are honoring. There are lots of gifts out there, but if you really want to make someone feel special, reconnect them to past memories and feelings through personal photos. And how do you do that? Easy! Check out Mimi's Memos Personalized For You, they can be personalized for anyone - father, brother, uncle, etc. Make this a truly special Father's Day for someone you cherish and respect!

Will HIPs Regulation Lead to a Better Market For Conveyancers?

After being in existence for over a year and receiving almost nonstop criticism from both opposition political parties and conveyancers alike, how are Home Information Packs (HIPs) faring as the new second stage packs come into effect? Branded as unnecessary red tape by the main body representing estate agents, the packs' defenders have long sought to play up the positive aspects of the scheme including faster processing times and increased buyer knowledge.

The Property Codes Compliance Board (PCCB) is one such supporter of the scheme who sees the packs having a positive influence on the market. According to their new research, the packs, criticised for being expensive, are actually much less costly than critics predicted originally and with new regulation changes are set to become more efficient.

The PCCB have recently welcomed the decision by the Association of Home Information Pack Providers (AHIPP) to open up their database of HIP providers, which the PCCB argue will allow for more consumer choice and will create a far more efficient market for HIPs, with buyers and sellers being able to choose from a wider range of competing providers.

"It's good to see the industry take the lead in responding to new developments in the market. This move will extend the coverage of the HIP Code at a time when companies are seeking imaginative and cost effective ways of providing HIPs that comply with the law. Consumers should take comfort from the assurance provided by the presence of the Code logo on a wider range of products and from the knowledge that subscribers are subject to exacting standards overseen by an independent body." Said Richard Footitt from the PCCB.

Will new regulation help the market? The PCCB, which oversees the regulation of the HIP providers, said that in recent months they had taken firm steps to improve the overall quality of the HIPs market by introducing tough new regulation that will prevent companies from cutting corners with their service. Footitt noted that for the first time, potential providers will have to submit sample HIPs in order to become accredited.

"The first phase of HIPs comes to an end early in April, and the industry needs to be ready to respond to the opportunities that the new statutory framework will bring. The PCCB will continue to emphasise the benefits of commissioning HIPs from Code subscribers. And we will increasingly highlight those practices that expose the public to unacceptable risks when they come to buy and sell their home." Added Foottitt.

With house sales declining almost month on month the conveyancing sector is under much greater pressure than ever before but as the regulator points out, the temptation to cut corners must be resisted and instead should be replaced by increased efficiency to make things work,

"Tough market conditions inevitably bring pressure on the industry to review costs and to search for different solutions. The way forward though is not to cut corners and to lower standards and expectations. Consumer confidence in the industry will come from delivering quality services and products at the right price and at the right time, at the beginning of the process and until contracts are signed."

Finding the right conveyancer is simple when you know what you are looking for especially after you understand terms such as stamp duty, property lawyers etc.

Skye Boat Song - Scottish Melody - Kylerhea Straits - NATO Ships Thursday, January 20, 2011

Skye Boat Song - Traditional Scottish Rowing Song. I've travelled to Skye many times, and climbed the peaks and ridges both in the Red and Black Cuillins Hills. Transgendered Musician - Denise Hewitt - performs this haunting song on my Technics PR903 Digital Piano augmented by some synthesised orchestral strings. During a trip back on Wednesday 15th June 2005, I had the good fortune to travel to Skye by the beautiful Glenelg - Kylerhea car ferry. Passing through the Straits of Kylerhea - Caol Reatha - at this time was the unusual sight of an exotic international flotilla of NATO Naval vessels including the following ships A230 - Admiral Pitka - Estonian Naval Coastal Patrol P554 - HDMS Makrelen - Danish Coastal Patrol Vessel MSF1 - Danish "Drone" Mine Clearance Vessel M923 - Narcis - Belgian MineHunter/Mine Sweeper M1065 - Dillingen - German Naval Mine Hunter This small flotilla of naval ships left Leith, Edinburgh on 3rd June 2005, and then sailed around the the British Coastline finally arriving in Portsmouth on 24th June 2006. It was an awesome sight to watch these ships sail swiftly and silently, one-by-one, through the narrow Kylerhea straits which are only around 330metres wide at their narrowest point!.... Othe photos shot by Denise show the Glenelg-Kylerhea Car Ferry - Glenachulish - arriving on the remote Skye settlement of Kylerhea which is also the location of the Kylerhea Sea Otter Haven - developed by the Forestry Commission. Brief History of Vodka Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Vodka is one of the most popular liquors in the world, and in modern times is often used as the perfect mixer drink because its relatively light and clean flavor allows mixed drinks to take on the taste flavors of the mixers as opposed to the sharpness of alcohol. But when did it all begin?

The word "vodka" was first found in 1405 in Polish documents. For centuries, vodka wasn't considered a recreational thing, but a drink that had actual medicinal properties. This might seem funny in modern times, but back when medicines weren't available, a little bit of liquor probably did make life seem a little easier and the pain slightly more bearable.

While the modern word might not show up until the 15th century, the earliest forms of liquor that can be clearly defined as form of vodka appear by the 11th century in Poland, and then further east. However this point does cause some arguments as many sources claim that the first definitive modern form of this drink comes from Russia much later: around late 1300s.

Many hard liquors are associated with a specific culture, and the same is true here. Mexico has its tequila, while Scotland and Ireland have whiskey, while England has gin. Several nations are culturally tied to vodka as the "official" drink, including Russia, Poland, the Ukraine and other former USSR nations in that area such as Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. What must have been hard to imagine years ago is that this liquor would spread world wide to be one of the most popular in many different nations, especially for mixed drinks and cocktails.

If you would like to know more about the best vodka drinks take a look at that page or go ahead and enjoy this other article that is all about different vodka cocktails to try. Thanks for reading!

Who Are The Estonia Special Forces? Wednesday, January 12, 2011

The Estonia Special Forces are also known as the Estonian Defense Force. They are special operation units that make up the unified forces under the Army, Navy, Air Force and Defense League in the country. They are members of the Alliance Missions and work with NATO and the European Union.

Their History

The history of the Estonian Defense Forces dates back to WWI. During WWII, the Estonian Armed forces were disarmed by the Russians by the Red Army. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the Republic of Estonia was formed. The current Estonia Defense Forces have been in operation since 1991 and consist of several branches of the armed forces of the country, including several army branches.

How To Become A Member Of The Estonian Special Forces

In Estonia, entrance into the military is mandatory for all men for 8 to 11 months in which they are taught basic defense skills. Those who stay in the forces can become active in one of the armed forces branches, or in the volunteer civilian defense force.

Estonian Special Forces Training

The training that special forces operatives receive depends upon the branch of service in which they serve. As military service in Estonia is compulsory for all males for a period of less than a year, those who stay active in the military can be trained for further defense. The primary goal of the Estonian Special Forces is to preserve the independence of the nation, although they work actively with other countries, including the United States. There are four headquarters for the defense districts located in Tallinn, Tapa, Luunja and Parnu.

What Are They Best At?

The Estonian Special Forces are best at preparedness and always being ready to defend their nation at any time of crisis. All branches of the service are in a constant defense mode to defend their country and work cooperatively with the other military branches as well as the volunteer civilian defense league.

Weapons Of The Estonian Special Forces

Mortars, armored cars, self propelled artillery and anti-aircraft missile launchers are part of the weapons used in the Estonian Special Forces. They also use recoilless rifles and anti-tank missile launchers, although there are not great numbers of these weapons. They have fighter aircraft, helicopters and transport aircraft as well.

Known Missions

The primary objective of Estonia Special Forces is the defense of their own country. They have few weapons, although with the compulsory military service, they are focused on self defense. They have not had any known missions since the inception of the armed forces in 1991, although they work in cooperation with NATO to defend their territorial waters against attack. The civilian defense also works in putting out wild fires, maintaining order in the country and insuring the independence of the nation of Estonia.

Units

The special forces units of the Army are called the Maavagi and are the main arm of the Estonian Special Defense forces. They are designed to carry out military tasks as well as for the support of civil structures. The Merevagi is the naval operations unit of the Estonian Special Forces. The Ohuvagi is the special forces unit for the Air Force. The Defense League is comprised of volunteers and are called the Kaitseliit.

Are They Professional Soldiers?

Since military service is compulsory in Estonia, all males of a certain age are considered professional soldiers. All males are taught basic defense. Those who are in the Army, Navy and Air Force continue with their military training. The Defense League, however, is a civilian branch and is made up of civilian volunteers who have received minimal compulsory military training.
